Revision as of 12:49, 1 September 2018

This page is about the blog. For the album with the acronym BaM, see Bushes and Marshmallows.

I failed the quiz.
This article is missing trivia.
The basic details are all here, but if you know some fun facts on these tracks, you should add them.

Blödsinn am Mittwoch (officially translated as Silliness on Wednesday), commonly shortened to BAM, was a blog run by C418. The original concept was for him to release a short song every Wednesday, but this later expanded to include albums and songs as long as 50 minutes. 52 "BAMs" were released between 2007 and 2009.

Bushes and Marshmallows was my english translation to a blog I used to host, called “Blödsinn am Mittwoch,” which translates into “silliness on Wednesday.” On that blog I created some piece of music every Wednesday, even if I had no time. It helped me get better at making music, and get better at making mediocre music under pressure, haha.

"BAM #1" was the creation of my blog. I thought of releasing songs every week and ended up having a normal blog with random song releases. But if you try to listen to them in order, you may notice how my quality level moved every time. One of the things I like about these “BAM”s. I can follow myself in the path of music creation.

Oh and hello! You actually got this far! Thanks for going that deep into my history, you lurking bastard.

Not every BAM release still exists, as only the first 25 tracks were included in oldgarbage.zip and many were not archived by the Internet Archive. An appropriate source for each surviving BAM will be given, as well as details about what the lost BAMs might have been.

This song was the creation of my blog. I thought of releasing songs every week and ended up having a normal blog with random song releases. But if you try to listen to them in order, you may notice how my quality level moved every time. One of the things I like about these “BAM”s. I can follow myself in the path of music creation. Actually this song was just a joke. I told myself to make a song thats just a minute long, as fast as possible. The next day, this blog was created.

Okay, this song was the next step into my “one crappy song per week” idea. It’s two things. Me playing a Super Mario level song from memory, and an old song of smn, a good friend of mine. It’s incredibly stupid and I should feel ashamed to put it up. Even today.

BAM #3

BAM #3

I created this directly after #2. I was digging the intro and then fucked up everything else. Worthy of a facepalm.

Aaah.

This is the song where I broke my “only one minute per song” rule. I realized that you can’t tell a ‘story’ in just one minute. This song had to be longer than one minute. If you listen to it, maybe you’ll notice that it kinda ends after the first minute is over and starts over again shortly.

Overall, this song is meh.

BAM #6

This one’s actually decent. Not in the beginning, but it evolves pretty good. I like it that way. Back then when I released it, I wanted to make it longer because I liked it. Took me about a week to post the longer version. Nobody noticed anyway. I probably had about 5 visits a week. Today I have almost thousand a day. BUT that seems because those chinese people are streaming my music over some sort of internet radio. I hope they enjoy it. I can’t ask them because I can’t speak chinese.

Let’s see. Hm. Oh yeah, thats the song where I just focused on using a drum set from a magazine cd. Ew. Just ew. Skip this.

BAM #8

BAM #8
Length 2:19
I have no idea what this is. Probably some kind of ambient click and dip. Not interesting.

BAM #9

BAM #9
Length 3:13
Quite good actually. Gives me sometimes the “musician earwigs”. Meaning repeating a song you’ve made decades ago in your head until you beg for mercy. But this song really is actually decent. A neat twist at the end. Stupid drums in the middle.

I seem to make such songs quite often. Those kind of songs with more than one in them. It’s okay’ish I guess. I can’t ask anyone for their opinion. Imagining to ask my parents how they liked BAM#10 gives me the shudders.

An unfinished project of a friend. I tried completing it with my style. Meaning fucking up his old version of it. He said it’s lovely. I say it’s kinda okay.

This song is from an album that nobody knows of because it was never released.

BAM #13 - cheating

BAM #13
Length 4:12
This song was from an album nobody knows of. That’s because I never released it. The song itself is very offbeat. Thats why I originally called it ‘cheating’.

Connections

BAM #13 - cheating appears on Mixes as a remixed track named Confusion.

BAM #14

BAM #14
Length 6:19
Heh, my original commentary to this song was ‘Ooh! Long!’. Quite funny, considering that todays releases aren’t below 8 minutes.

Connections

BAM #14 appears on Mixes as a shorter remixed track named Incredibly Detailed Acid Trip.

BAM #15

BAM #15
Length 3:46
This one is just boring.

BAM #16

BAM #16

This one kinda broke the style I always had. Kind of the point where I tried to do things different.

BAM #17

BAM #17

Probably the only chiptune song I’m not ashamed of. Except maybe for one of the boy songs. But I don’t have those anymore. I could ask smn if he has them.

BAM #18

This was between a pause of releasing nothing I think. Maybe thats why it sounds kinda weird.

This song… well… let’s say the ‘melody’ you hear at the beginning was made from a friend that used VPN.

BAM #20 - combat418 mix

Kind of an old song I pasted these samples in. After that I was finally able to finish that song.

A VERY badly mastered song with a funny idea of using crying soundsamples. I made two other versions of this.

Connections

BAM #20 appears on Bushes and Marshmallows as the first part of the track named Edward.

BAM #21

BAM #21

This song is from an album nobody knows of because it was never released. I think the basedrum is way too heavy. Like in #20. Bad bad bad mastering. Not so bad of a song.

BAM #20 appears on Bushes and Marshmallows as the second part of the track named Edward. Lyrics can also be found here.

Heh. This was kind of a good idea. Adding distortion over EVERYTHING and make it the essential part of the song.

BAM #23

BAM #23

I don’t like this song. It has COMPLETELY random lyrics. Spoken from different digital sources.

Extra #1

Okay. This song I think was one of the first songs smn made in Ableton Live. Of course his song was not that good, but thats an usual thing. You never get used to a program after two or three tries. My version of it is not grand either. But I think at least it’s kind of enjoyable.

This IS crappy. And totally intentional too. I can’t understand people liking this. Luckily there are none. I think.

I don’t even know what I should say about this.

Overuse of too much loudness?

This song was made while I was doing a ‘christmas special’. It’s quite dull. At work, a friend teased me a bit and asked if there would be a “christmas special bam”. I ended up actually making one. It’s BAM #27.

BAM #27 - EP

BAM #27 - EP

Probably the first really long BAM. It’s worthy being called an EP. It has kinda weird songs. I never did something like this before. Hm. I should try more of those ‘Christmas specials’… Oh wait. Last December I released ‘zweitonegoismus’. Nevermind.

This is a strange one, innit? I kept making the synths go more and more nuts, but you still can listen to even when the melodys make no sense anymore.

“MEINE GUTEN VORSAETZE” was created on the 1st of january 2008. I had fun creating it, although it sucks. Very. Deeply.

This is the most popular BAM in China.

Trivia

  • Meine guten Vorsaetze is the german for "My good intentions".

Nothing more than a song to check if I’m still capable to make music. This song said: “Kinda.”

BAM #30 – The Whatever Directors Cut

BAM #30
Length 50:13
This album (it really is a full album) was fun to make.

When I had really a shitload of work to do, I asked myself if I still would be able to make music. So I started creating an album as fast as possible. I didn’t care for quality. All I wanted was quantity.

So here it is. An album actually created in under two weeks.

I have to admit, most of the songs are stupid. But I think there are at least 4, maybe 5 that are worth a listen.

My most personal work. And the most experimental too!

I don’t exactly know my intentions of doing something like that anymore. I think it happened very naturally due to my dull and melancholic life at that time. I was just putting notes on what I’ve seen. There are two collaborations on this album, both including the voice of smn and once a “horribly out of tune” guitar by a very good friend of mine. As every free album I have done, it has flaws. When I put this out on the net, I felt a big depression because of my so called flaws. Today I think everything needs some kind of flaw to be sort of predictable, and maybe more friendly…

Some people wondered what the names could be, so here are the translations in order:

twotone, egoism, shiftless, headmusic, (phlips), ill, (phleps), sand, (anthem), plastic

I decided to make BAM #51 a bit longer. Currently I’m doing pretty good and had a lot to add. I just don’t know when I’m done. Maybe a month, maybe two. Maybe tomorrow. Well, smn gave me lovely images, so I can at least start finishing a cover. I love to cover my works, it kinda gives me the feel that I accomplished something.

The track appears on Bushes and Marshmallows as a track named Monkey Park.
